Palo Santo (Bursera Graveolens) is a wild tree that is native to Peru, Ecuador, and other South American countries. It grows in dry tropical forests and produces very fragrant resin. In Spanish, Palo Santo means “Holy Wood.” For thousands of years, the wood, resin, and oil have been used for its calming effects during medicinal and meditative purposes. The Bursera Graveolens tree can only be harvested once it dies a natural death, which can take decades, and should never be chopped down. Because of the rising market for it, some have taken to illegally cutting down the trees before their time and putting the natural oils on the chopped wood to give it that genuine "Palo Santo" scent, even when it's not naturally-derived.

It’s mainly used to treat pain and stress. It’s also said to clear negative energy. Palo Santo is associated with several medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Reportedly, it has been said to help:
– Act as an anti-inflammatory
– Repel mosquitos
– Reduce pain (arthritis, headaches, throat, stomach)
– Improve stress response
– Treat excessive sweating/is an anti-perspirant
– As a liniment for rheumatism

Our Palo Santo is fresh, relatively uniform in size, and heavily filled with aromatic natural essential oils from sitting on the forest floors for years after the trees have fallen from which they originated. The ritualistic burning of Palo Santo can be traced back to the Incan Empire, where it was used in spiritual ceremonies and as a kind of folk medicine. Fast forward nearly 500 years to today and Palo Santo is still used within Central and South American and other Latinx communities to cleanse spaces and people of negative energy (or mala energy), and even to keep insects away, as the smoke's distinct scent also serves as a repellant. It has been said to have amazing spiritual and emotional healing and connecting properties, having been believed by some to heal the physical body of various ailments for centuries. The smoke and fragrance it produces have been used for thousands of years by many to relieve common colds, flu, asthma, and headaches.

Palo Santo is a powerful antioxidant, as it has the highest amount of d-limonene (60%-70%) of any tree oil. It is part of the same botanical family as Frankincense and Myrrh. In a 2017 review by the US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health, the substance is stated to have analgesic (pain-relieving) and anti-inflammatory properties, which provides scientific evidence of it's long-standing folklore with Shamans famously using it to fight illness. It's all starting to come full-circle, with modern science having answers as to why it was regarded so high, spiritually, for so long.

Details: Four (4) ethically sourced, authentic Palo Santo sticks from Peru.
Dimensions: Each stick is about 4" (10.16 cm) long.
Use + Care: Each Palo Santo stick can get anywhere between 15-25 uses, depending on the length and thickness of the stick, as well as how much of a flame/ember you allow to be caught for each session. So you can get a lot of life out of a set, let alone each individual stick. 1 - Light gently at a downward angle. 2 - Allow the flame to naturally burn out or blow it out, after 30-60 seconds of catching flame. The longer you let it burn, the stronger the aroma will be. 3 - After the flame is blown out and a small ember is caught, tilt it upward, carrying with your dominant hand (to prevent accidents) and walk around you space or rest the Palo Santo stick on a safe, fireproof bowl, plate, tray, or surface. Glass or concrete are good options, but never wood or plastic. 4 - Let it do its thing and bask in the natural incense from our planet Earth. They can burn slowly for 1 to 2 hours, but you can end a session early by dipping the embered tip into water or under running water to extinguish it and reuse later. We recommend lighting with our Match Holder + Striker.

Contains high concentrations of safe limonene and a-terpineol terpenes, which gives it a distinctive scent of citrus, pine, and mint.

* Palo Santo is not associated with any major side effects. However, it is important to use caution if the following scenarios apply to you:

1 - It’s your first time using it. Do a patch test first. If your skin becomes irritated, stop use immediately.
2 - You have lung or breathing problems. Avoid burning Palo Santo, which may worsen your symptoms. Open a door or window or use an air purifier during use if you decide to do so with a respiratory condition.
3 - You’re pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s recommended to avoid using Palo Santo oil or incense in this case.
4 - Use caution around pets. Not enough research or studies have been done surrounding effects on animals, so take good care of your furry friends in respecting your home as it's also their safe space and don't over do it. Do not let animals get a hold of or chew on Palo Santo.

We would also recommend airing out your space with an open window or door to avoid any overwhelming effects, especially if you're new to using it.
